Excellent post. Things really changed for me too, when I was forced to actually go out there and work on the selling/marketing side. Perhaps once they've gotten beyond junior, we should send all of the programmers to the front line to get a real taste of the action. Hiding in the back for too long allows them to develop unrealistic expectations for the market place.

The number of good programmers is increasing, it's also easier to make good software so there's more competition.

Also, the time that users will sit down and learn about your application is over. There's an abundance of free apps, and apps in any category, if you can't catch the user's attention fast, he's gone.

Ok, the market is bigger too, but usually the top app (or sometimes apps) will have 90% martketshare, while the other 10% is divided between the next 50 apps.
